The Lake District, home of Scafell Pike, Windermere and Wastwater, has been named the World’s 31st World Heritage site.
The Lord Clark of Windermere who put the bid forward for the Unesco status said the decision is ‘momentous’ and the UN have recognised the region’s links with culture, romantic art and literature as well as it’s landscape, they also praised the region’s ‘picturesque aesthetic’. The decision will have lasting benefits for the landscape.
The UN also commented that “The special significance of the Lake District lies in the interaction between social, economic, cultural and environmental influences”.
The Lord Clark of Windermere said "It is this exceptional blend which makes our Lake District so spectacularly unique and we are delighted, many people have come together to make this happen and we believe the decision will have long and lasting benefits for the spectacular Lake District landscape, the 18 million visitors we welcome every year and for the people who call the national park their home.”
